Kayaking

Rivers of Gold

.
..If you feel like you want to skip the surf and the skyscrapers for a day or two

...............to discover another side of Queensland's Gold Coast......

Kayaking Palm Beach

......then perhaps you could try some Kayaking with the family.

Behind the golden beaches, below the glittering towers there's a Gold Coast unknown to most visitors and even many locals. The five rivers that wend their way down from the Gold Coast hinterland provide another means by which to explore this tourist paradise, and the best way is by Kayak. You don't have to be experienced or fit to try it out.

On a kayak you set the pace and go wherever you fancy, including marine parks off limits to other vessels. Making no sound other than the quiet splash of your oar, you won't scare away the wildlife.

It's a great and inexpensive way to spend time outdoors. Your only dilemma is which river to explore.

At Blue Ocean Apartment you are ideally located with easy access to 2 of these 5 great rivers,

Known as:

Currumbin:         The Family River

Tallebudgera:     The Romantic River

Pimpama :          The Fishing River

Coomera :           The Quiet River

Nerang :              The Big River

Currumbin :  The Family River

Kayaking Palm Beach Queensland

Blue Ocean Apartment is located on the southern most part of Palm Beach, and perched on the banks of the Currumbin River – The Family River

                                            ......so you are already there.

Currumbin Creek feels like it is the setting for a 1960's coming of age film.  From the ramshackle boatshed, staffer John cheerfully kits tourists out with a kayak for a yesteryear price ($15/hour). Outside, a rope swing sends deliriously happy kids into sapphire waters. Nobody's in a rush, nobody wears shoes, and there's room for everyone to experience a taste of uncomplicated joy.

Currumbin's shallow, low traffic waters are ideal for beginners and children. After a brief lesson in Kayak control, giggling children capsize each other with enthusiastic disregard for nautical convention. A juvenile flotilla explores the sandy inlets in search of pirate treasure and exotic fish.

Upriver you might discover a massive flying fox colony as you weave your way through a flooded mangrove forest, where crabs wave from below branches and fish swim between submerged tree roots. Further up river, the Boatshed runs tours ($45) that pass by a waterfront koala colony. Afterwards, exchange your kayak for a coffee at Café by the Bridge and watch the kids splash around for a while.

Where : The Boatshed, 2-4 Thrower Drive, Currumbin

Suits : Families, Difficulty : easy

Hire : www.currumbinboatshed.com.au

Tallebudgera: The Romantic River

The next closest option is Tallebudgera, the romantic river located at the northern end of Palm Beach, a short 20 minute walk along the beach from Blue Ocean Apartment.

Tallebudgera is the prettiest of the five rivers with its sinuous course, secluded beaches and natural beauty, it's the perfect place for romance.

Hire Kayaks at All Coast Paddle Board Hire ($20 per hour) opposite Burleigh headland and let the current take you past the deserted, forest-fringed Echo beach. Paddle west on waters that change colour from turquoise to emerald, towards the unmistakable profile of the Springbrook Plateau; origin of this rio d'amor.

Discover islands little bigger than your vessel, perfect for two, a picnic basket and bottle of champagne. If all goes well, you can always get married at Echo Beach on your return – weddings are regularly held on its white sandy shores.

Where :  Talebudgera Leisure Centre, 1525 Gold Coast HWY, Palm Beach

Best for : Couples    :   Easy

Highlights :  paddling across to Echo Beach and exploring Burleigh Headland

Eat :  Bring a picnic or head to the leisure for good coffee and sandwiches

Hire :   www.allcoastpaddleboardshire.com.au

Pimpama : The Fishing River

"I've never had anyone come out and not catch a fish, " says Andy Klienschmidt of " Kayak Fishing Tours " (from $115), as the sun peeks above the horizon.  Andy explains the operation of the pedal-powered apecially desihned fishing Kayak and its equipment quietly and with confidence.  There are no waterfront houses as on the southern rivers and almost no boats.

Choose a half day or a full day standard tour or the heart-pumping shark fishing tour ( November to January only ).  Pike, flathead, trevally, or whiting are some of the species you might catch.  Andy can make a fisherman out of almost anyone. bait-gathering lessons - starting withcollecting worms on the beach and pumping for yabbies - are an additional option, perfect for beginners.

Where:    Colman Road, Coomera: 34 kms north of Sufers

Best for:   Fishing, wilderness   -  easy / moderate

Highlight:  drifting down a mangrove - lined creek

Eat:       what ever you catch, Andy also provides nacks

Tours:   www.kayakfishingtours.com.au

Coomera : The Quiet Rive

In a city where the pace is quiet hectic, the longest of the five rivers is a cocoon of contemplation.  Adventure Outlet delivers kayaks ($120 / day ) to Jabiru Island near the Coomeras mouth.  Enjoy the wilderness presence of Coombabah Lake ; an internationally significant tidal wetland that's as untouched as when the only watercraft were the Kombumerri's stringybark canoes.

Today kayaks and canoes are still the only permissable watercraft and the only sounds are those of the native wildlife, the wind and the cry of square - tailed kites.  Coombabah means "place of turtles" , but the main attraction is the bird life; the 2000 - hectare shore bird sanctuary is part of a treaty with China and Japan.

Migratory species such as the endangered Eastern Curlew rest here on there way to Siberia.

If you are feeling energetic, the 16 kilometre kayak paddle to the base of Tamborine Mountain will get the blood pumping: particularly fitting as Coomera means "blood" in Aboriginal.

Where : Jabiru Island, Paradise Point  17 km north of Surfers.

Best for :  Confident Kayakers looking for solitude and adventure   :  Moderate

Highlight :  a nautical pas de deux with black swans on Coombaba Lake

Hire/Tours  :  www.adventureoutlet.com.au

Nerang : The Big River

A historical trade route linking the hubs of Nerang, surfers Paradise and Southport, with more miles of canals than Venice and Amsterdam combined, the Nerang is the best tackled on a tour.

Set high above the city at Hinze Dam, Seaway Kayaking Tours provides a unique opportunity to paddle in the city's drinking water, surrounded by forested mountains and followed by a post paddle brunch ($115).

Most clients have never kayaked before, so tour leaders Andres and Daniel are patient with beginners and passionate about providing a fun experiance.

Paddle over the topmost branches of the flooded valley's submerged trees rather than battling tides and dodging boats.  After brunch, walk through the interpretive museum for a climpse of the Gold Coast's early settler life.

Downriver, local knowledge is Australian Kayaking Adventures' forte.  Owner Steven Vah delivers a wonderful insight into the regions Indigenious and modern history on the two-hour Sunset Tour ($55) around surfers.

Enjoy wine and cheese surrounded by high rise and mansions.  For wildlife spotting, Steve's Dolphin and Stadbroke Tour ($85) is your best bet.  watch Australian pelicans cruse inches above the waves like seaplanes or spot beautiful Goldern Walaby, found only on South Stradbroke Island.

"we usually see dolphins, which is a real thrill on a kayak since you can get much closer than in a boat."  Steve says. "but we also see turtles, stingrays, tropical fish, dugong, even a humpback whale and her calf in the seaway.  There really is nowhere quite like this, and on a kayak you're part of it."

Where :  Hinze Dam tour departs western boat ramp, Nerang- Murwillumbah Road Advancetown ,

23 kms west of Surfers: Sunset Tour  departs River ,  Drive Budds Beach, Sufers

Best for :  Adventures   easy/moderate

Highlight  :  Moutain scenery; Broadwater wildlife

Tours  :  www.seawaykayakingtours.com.au    and   www.australiankayakingadventures.com.au

                3 TIPS FOR HAPPY YAKKING:

  • Check tide times. If possible go with the tide, not against it.
  • Paddle on a weekday as weekends are busier.
  • Pick the least windy day of your stay.  Mornings and evenings are always calmer.

Customer Feedbacks
We have just returned from 9 nights in this AMAZING apartment, perfect location, perfect views, perfect apartment!!!! It was everything we hoped for, fully equipped with everything you need and then some. There is so much to do in the direct vicinity, we spent many days lazing by the beautiful pool then a 1 min walk to the beach. Many nights were spent cooking a poolside bbq, excellent facilities. The whole complex is immaculately maintained. We took our 2 girls (7 & 4) and they were in absolute heaven, a fantastic playground 4min walk away, fabulous restaurants near by. It was our 1st family holiday and we are about to book again for next year! We would recommend this to anyone, especially those with young children.

Zoe - July 2018

We absolutely loved our stay at the Blue Ocean Apartment and did not want to leave. The apartment was wonderful and equipped with everything we needed and the view was incredible-looking straight out towards the ocean. Sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine was so relaxing and we could watch our children in the resort style pool and spa, feeling like we were in Fiji! We could walk to the lake, shops, cafes, parks and literally straight onto the beach from the pool gate-everything was just so accessible. Rod and Cathy were so lovely and helpful with any of our queries and we will be telling all our friends looking for a holiday apartment to go here, we really enjoyed our time here!

Thanks so much

Thoughtful Inclusions

Excellent positioned apartment on the beach and adjacent to the calm water inlet with park, cafe and playground. Heated resort pool is terrific. The apartment size, layout and furnishings were great for 2adults and 2young children with heaps of thoughtful extras that make travel so much easier with a young family.

Ocean Blue just beautiful!

We had a fantastic holiday at Ocean Blue. The views were absolutely amazing and the property facilities had everything needed to entertain a young family. Rod was a pleasure to deal with and everything ran smoothly. The apartment was lovely and clean and decked with everything that was needed to make our holiday enjoyable which saved us transporting alot of things on the plane with us. We will definitely be booking again. The pool and those views were hard to leave behind.

It was soo comfortable and had everything we needed to make our stay that much more enjoyable. The highlight of my stay was having breakfast outside with that view!

This was the first time we had traveled to Qld, but definitely not the last!
I will contact you when we plan the next trip!
Thank you again
Good luck to you and your family in the future

We stayed here 2 years ago and decided to come back. My husband and our 2 children thoroughly enjoyed our stay here yet again. Great apartment with everything you need with ocean views from the balcony. The pool would have to be one of the best pools on the Gold Coast. We would highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday. Once again many thanks to Rod who was great to deal with.

Natalie November 2014

Have just come back from a week away at Blue Ocean Apartment. What a fantastic place to stay. Kids loved it, we loved it. That BED!!! OMG we wanted to take it home :) Thankyou Rod - we did not want to leave.

Deasey Family November 2014

Hi Rod. We had a lovely stay at Blue Ocean Apartment over the last 5 nights. Just wanted to double check that your new guests didn't cancel at last minute?!? We booked in to ****** Resort since you were booked for the extra dates we needed, and are grossly disappointed with it. Getting desperate...so thought I would check..just in case. Thanks Rod.

Lucy October 2014

This is the second time we have stayed at this beautiful apartment and the second time around was even better than the first! All the little extras like beach towels and toys, pantry items and handwash, coffee machine and a great selection of tea makes this place feel like our home away from home. Our kids absolutely frothed on the amazing pool and the surf out the front was pumping. Thanks again Rod, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning soon!!

Jono & Row Mereszka May 2014

Hi Rod - thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I am actually really excited about staying in your apartment! We have stayed in some beautiful places, but there's something about a really comfortable place right on the ocean that just tops everything! I would love to book for the 9 days if I can. If you could let me know the deposit details and I will make payment ASAP.

Trisha January 2014

A perfect apartment and location for a family escape from the Victorian winter. Had a great time and will be heading back for another holiday in the future.

Chris July 2013

Everything was covered all we had to bring were our two boys and ourselves, their were sun hats, sunblock, a superb coffee machine, toys for the children, buckets and spades and beach towls, the pool was out of this world with amazing night lights which changed colours and kept us mesmerized.

Anonymous - June 2013

It was awesome, we loved it. The apartment was bright and clean. Fabulous location with the best views. The children loved the pool, especially at night - magical. We would love to return and will now make this our place to stay on the Gold Coast! So much to do - our 10 day stay this April was far too short!

Kim Corley April 2013

What a beautiful place to stay. Everything you need is in the apartment. The pool is great with BBQs plenty of deck chairs and spa which was perfect after a big day at Movie World. The ocean is just past the pool. Fantastic view. Will definately be back to stay here.

Lyndal December 2012

The views from the balcony are magnificent and the pool area is the best , with a great barbecue area and plenty of lounges to soak up the sun. Its the perfect getaway. We loved our stay at Blue Ocean Apartment and will definitely be back again, A+ Many thanks Rod

Natalie October 2012

We had the best three nights ever at your place and my 4 year old was quite desolate in the plane back to Sydney as he would have loved to stay there forever
As would all of us.

Evina September 2012

What a fantastic stay, the apartment was first class, clean and well equipped with views to die for (we saw whales breaching one morning). Rod was fantastic to deal with. The beds were super comfortable and there were a lot of little extras that made our stay very relaxed. Location was brilliant also, the lagoon is great for swimming even in July and we had nightly swims with the kids in the pool and spar after big days at the theme parks. We will be back for sure :-)

Paul July 2012

There were 4 of us. Myself, my 15 yr old daughter, my 80 yr old dad, and my 73 yr old mother who has alzheimers. We had a blast. Long walks on the beach every morning followed by a swim in the pool and 15 mins in the steam room. We also went standup paddle boarding on the lagoon. We appreciated the little extras especially the hats and beach towels. My daughter didn't want to leave and my dad wants to make a permanent booking. We highly recommend staying here.

Emesha, June 2012

Awesome place to stay. Perfect for us with a 10yr old and 82 yr old. Apartment super clean with all the stuff you need for self catering - comfy beds and all the mod cons - great coffee machine. Loved the pool complex with BBQ. Fab views from very sheltered balcony. Great to walk onto the sand and into the surf every morning. Could call the 10yr old up from the pool for dinner. Easy to get straight onto the motorway and drive to all the attractions. Nice to be out of the Surfers bustle but easy to get there when you wanted to. Thanks for the stay. Beautiful morning suntrap!

Chrisy , April 2012

"The apartment is very clean, well equipped and perfect for some needed down time. The ocean views are just magnificent, so is the pool and the hot tub within the property. It truly feels like best of both worlds, with a personal touch. Liaising with Rod the owner of the property is what endeared me to make my choice in the first place, he is very professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the area even assisting with car hire options. My 2 friends came from Canada and another from South Africa are still raving about the Gold Coast and the property had a lot to do with it."

Lalie - December 2011

"Apart from the breathtaking view and amazing access to one of the best beaches in Australia this apartment was an absolute dream. A huge dining room and queenslands biggest breakfast bench allowed for quality family time in comfort and with first quality facilities. This was the first time I have booked a room where the place was actually bigger than the pictures suggested. Finally I want to thank Rod for the little things... Vegemite in the cupboard, coffee machine with refills, beach towels and the brand new BBQ tools. My family and I had a great experience and all of our visitors were equally impressed... Thanks "
